Scotland’s third largest city was once its biggest seaside resort, thanks to the miles of golden sands, which stretch north from the mouth of the River Don. Today Aberdeen has a businesslike air and is better known as the oil capital of Europe. Its foundations as a royal burgh date back to the early 12th century, and it grew into a major port for access to the Continent, trading in wool, fish and scholars from its two universities. In fact, the harbour is still the heart of the city. In the late 18th century, the town expanded and many of Aberdeen’s finest granite buildings in the New Town date from the 19th century.
Provost Ross’s House, on Ship row, houses the lively Aberdeen Maritime Museum with an 8.5m scale model of an oil rig. The Aberdeen Art Gallery on School hill has an outstanding collection of 18th to 20th century paintings. The magnificent Winter Gardens at Duthie Park are worth a visit as a family day out, being Europe’s largest indoor gardens, containing tropical plants, fish and birds and, in summer, a ‘talking’ cactus. The park is home to the impressive ‘Rose Mountain’.
A suggested tour of Aberdeen is to begin at the King’s College Visitor Centre, which stands on the site of the Great Hall of 1500. Nearby is King’s College Chapel. One can then walk down the High Street, which is now filled with students, to pass the Old Town House, before going to Cruickshank Botanic Garden.
