Nottingham Nottingham is visibly undergoing modernization, as massive new building projects are underway right across the city centre. Paul Smith designer wear, Nottingham Forest Football Club, and a thriving dance music scene have become the booming exports of a place that was once synonymous with hosiery and lace.
Anyone interested in the history of the city should give Nottingham Castle a visit for its very fine collection of medieval alabaster carvings. Heading west to the castle from the Broadmarsh centre you will go past the Costume Museum. Entrance to the Castle is free on weekdays with small charges at weekends.
Side trips from Nottingham should include the home of Robin Hood, which has now become Sherwood Forest Country Park, 20 miles north. Acting as a fun place for a family day out, it features a visitor centre with exhibitions, shops and a restaurant, and way marked forest trails. Most visitors head to the Major Oak, a massive tree said to be more than 800 years old.
