Plymouth was originally a small village called Sutton, but has turned today into Devon’s largest city. The city was historically significant, being like Liverpool, it was the launch pad of the British Empire. It was redeveloped after the bombings of the Second World War, and is today a successfully tourist city. At the top of most visitors’ list of places to visit will be the Hoe with its superb views, which is directed to by a long strip of lawn running south through the city centre.
The Hoe and the City Centre is pretty compact so can be explored easily by foot. Further places to see include Smeaton’s Light which contains an interactive exhibition of the history of the Hoe. Close by is the Plymouth Dome which tells the city’s history in again an interactive way. Many other attractions are clustered around the Barbican, with the newest attraction being the Plymouth Mayflower.
Plymouth has its own airport about 4 miles north of the city centre. Trains also run regularly from London Paddington station.
